Pradeep Shikhar Samman mired in controversy

Bhopal, Feb 1 (UNI) The family of late Pandit Pradeep, who was a poet of national stature and contributed philosophical songs to several Hindi films, has described a February 6 award function in his name -- scheduled at the ancient temple town in Ujjain, his hometown, as ''unauthorised'' -- and demanded that it be halted.

''The programme is being organised by an Ujjain-based institute that is misusing my father's name. I have written to Madhya Pradesh Governor Balram Jakhar, the District Collector and Superintendent of Police,'' the poet's Mumbai-resident daughter Mitul Pradeep told UNI over telephone.

She has dispatched a legal notice to the institute's head Keshav Rai. Ms Mitul is the secretary of a foundation set up in the poet's name.

The Ujjain based Institute constituted the Pt Pradeep Shikhar Samman last year. The award carries a cash component of Rs one lakh.

The institute received a grant from the state government's Culture Department.

''I have received Ms Mitul's letter. As far as availability of the auditorium is concerned, any institute may use it by depositing Rs 5,000,'' Ujjain District Collector Neeraj Mandloi told UNI over the telephone.

The official pointed out the need for fathoming the legal implications of Ms Mitul's accusations.

''In 2006, the institute conferred the Samman on lyricist Ravi who also received a cheque for Rs 51,000 but it bounced,'' the lady alleged.

This year, Bollywood music directors Kalyanji Anandji have been selected for the award.
