Petition seeks CBI probe into Dimpy murder case
Chandigarh, Feb 1 (UNI) A plea seeking probe by the Central Bureau of Investigations(CBI) into the daring murder of Prabhjinder Singh Dimpy' was raised today in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
The petition alleged that the police had failed to nab anyone in this respect even after a lapse of six months period. Dimpy was murdered here in front of Lake Club in July last year.
A writ petition in this respect was filed by Dimpy's father-in-law Hardeep Singh which came up for preliminary consideration before Justice Virender Singh.
It has been pointed out in the petition that Dimpy was a popular political person in his area and had contested elections in 1991 to Punjab Vidhan Sabha. Apparently alarmed at his popularity, his rivals conspired against him.
The counsel for the petitioner submitted that Dimpy was gunned down on July 7, 2006 by motorcycle borne miscreants in front of the Lake Club which is located at a stone's throw from Raj Bhawan where police remains on guard round the clock. The victim was first called up on phone by a lady to come out of the Club and was killed within minutes he came out.
He further pointed out that the police has not made any arrest though some names were mentioned by the petitioner's family.
These included the names of some people who are considered close to Shiromani Akali Dal(B) general secretary Sukhbir Singh Badal.
Police has not moved against suspected culprits apparently because of the political interference, the counsel added while seeking a CBI probe.
After the preliminary hearing, Justice Virender Singh issued notices for March 26 to the Chandigarh Home Secretary, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Chandigarh.
The bench has directed SSP Chandigarh to file a detailed personal affidavit giving details of the inquiry conducted into the case so far.
