Muslim-Christian-Jewish dialogue vital-Pope says
ROME, Feb 1 (Reuters) Pope Benedict said today dialogue among Christians, Muslims and Jews was vital and urged Christians in West Asia not to abandon the region.
''Inter-religious and inter-cultural dialogue is not just an option, but a vital necessity for our times,'' he told members of a foundation on inter-religious dialogue.
Christians needed to find ''the ties that unite'' them with the world's other two great monotheistic religions.
Muslims around the world protested against the Pope last year over a speech he made which was seen as critical of Islam.
He has since defused much of the row over his comments, which he said were misinterpreted.
In another address, Benedict said he was deeply concerned over violence in West Asia and the fate of Christians there.
''Christian minorities find it difficult to survive in the midst of such a volatile geopolitical panorama and are often tempted to emigrate,'' he said.
''In these circumstances, Christians of all traditions and communities in West Asia are called to be courageous and steadfast in the power of the spirit of Christ,'' he said.
Benedict has said he hopes to visit the Holy Land as soon as the situation there allows. He has standing invitations from Israeli and from Palestinian authorities.
