Mumbai to have its first OBC woman mayor

Mumbai, Jan 31 (UNI) The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation which is slated to go to the polls tomorrow, is all set to achieve a new milestone, when for the first time it will be headed by a woman mayor from the other backward caste (OBC) category.

Neighbouring Thane, Navi Mumbai, Pune and Solapur will have a woman mayor from the general category, in accordance with the reservation policy for mayoral posts in Maharashtra.

The lots for these reservations for mayors of the 22 municipal corporations in the state were opened today in presence of Minister of State for Urban Development Rajesh Tope.

Kalyan-Dombivali municipal corporation will create another record by having for the first time a mayor from the scheduled caste, while Ulhasnagar will have female mayor from the scheduled caste.

The Nagpur municipal corporation will be headed by a mayor from the scheduled tribe.

The mayoral post of Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Mira-Bhyander, Nasik, Malegaon, Dhule, Kolhapur, Jalgaon, Aurangabad and Nanded will go to a candidate from the general category.

The mayoral post of Ahmednagar, Singli Miraj-Kupwadda, Akola, Amravati will go to candidates from Other backward class category, while Pimpri-Chinchwad mayor will also be a women from the OBC category.

The tenure of the mayor will be two and half years.
