London, Jan 1 (Reuters) Following are some of the major events to have occurred on February 1 since 1900: 1908 - King Carlos I of Portugal was assassinated together with his son in Lisbon.
1946 - Norwegian statesman Trygve Lie was elected the first secretary-general of the United Nations.
1958 - Egypt and Syria proclaimed their union in a state to be known as the United Arab Republic.
1966 - US comedy film actor and director Buster Keaton died. He starred in and directed silent classics including ''Our Hospitality'', ''The Navigator'' and ''The General''.
1979 - Iranian revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini returned to Tehran from Paris after 15 years of exile spent mainly in Iraq.
1992 - US President George Bush and Russian President Boris Yeltsin signed the Camp David declaration stating that their countries no longer regarded each other as adversaries.
1995 - Communist Vietnam raised its red flag in Washington for the first time since the end of the Vietnam War as the two former foes opened liaison offices in each other's capitals.
2000 - Scientists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico said they had traced the origin of the AIDS virus to around 1930.
2001 - Indonesia's parliament voted 393 to four to accept a report which found President Abdurrahman Wahid had acted improperly over two graft scandals.
2002 - A court ruling overturned a savings freeze in Argentina, leaving the banks and peso currency facing possible collapse and leaving the government to revise its economic crisis strategy.
2003 - The space shuttle Columbia, broke up over Texas on re-entering atmosphere at end of their almost 16-day flight killing all seven astronauts including the first Israeli.
2005 - Sudan's parliament voted through a peace agreement to end the conflict in the south of the country. The deal ended Africa's longest civil war.
**2006 - Scientists said a distant object discovered in space in 2005 and later named Eris, could be another dwarf planet in our solar system.
