3 suspected LTTE activists arrested

Mumbai, Jan 31 (UNI) Three suspected LTTE activists, hailing from Tamil Nadu, were arrested with 500 ball bearings, 21 imported cameras and materials near Madhubani Beer bar, Vile Parle in Western Suburbs.

The Vile Parle police said the arrests were made yesterday.

The police sources said when their patrol team went to check whether Madhubani Beer Bar was closed or not at about 0200 hrs, they found an adjoining courier office open with a van parked there.

This aroused their suspicion. When they went closer, they found three people there and asked them to reveal their identity. However, they failed to give proper reply, forcing the police to search their vehicle which led to the recovery of 21 cameras, 65 CDs, 22 cameral accessories, 30 computer chips and 500 ball bearings and some Sri Lankan currencies from their possession.

The accused wanted to send the material to Chennai via courier, sources said.

The trio have been identified as Mohammed Kasim Nainnar (47), Hamid Vahab Sultan (37) and Mohammed Rasid Sayyed Ahmed Khan (33), all hailing from Tamil Nadu. Here, they stayed at Zakir Hotel in Null Bazar area in South Mumbai.

The police have also arrested onwer of M R Courier Rafiq Ahmed Sheikh.

The police is investigating whether the arrested people have any nexus with the recently arrested LTTE activist here, who too had purchased ball bearings to send it to Chennai.

They were produced before Metropolitan Magistrate Court, Andheri, who remanded them to police custody till February 2, sources added.
