REL nets Rs 4,200 cr contracts

New Delhi, Jan 30 (UNI) Reliance Energy Ltd's (REL) engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) division has bagged two contracts totalling over Rs 4,200 crore to make REL the largest EPC contractor in the power sector of the country.

The first contract worth Rs 3,763 crore includes setting up of two 600 MW coal-based power projects on a turnkey basis. The project was awarded to the company by the Haryana Power Generation Corporation (HPGC) under a competitive bidding process.

The two projects are to be implemented in 35 and 38 months respectively.

''The contract is proposed to be financed with debt-equity ratio of 80:20, with 20 per cent of cost to be contributed by the state government,'' REL said in a statement.

This is the first project in the northern region to be awarded the mega project status under union government's 'mega' project policy.

The project is expected to result in drastic reduction in cost of power generation. Once the plants get operational, an additional 288 lakh units would be available to Haryana to cater to additional 4.4 lakh consumers, which constitute 11 per cent of the existing consumers.

The state government has already acquired 989 acres of land in Barwala and Hissar for the project.

Under the second contract, REL will install two 250 MW units in Parichha Thermal Power Station, near Jhansi, for Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam (UPRVUN), which is expanding its capacity.

The value of this order is Rs 395 crore.

UPRVUN had earlier awarded the work on the main plant consisting of Boiler-Turbo-Generator (BTG) and civil works for the BTG to Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL).

The balance work, including water system, fire protection system, coal handling system extension, ash handling system and hydrogen generation plant, has to be executed by REL within 24 months.
