MG University retains overall championship

Bangalore, Jan 29 (UNI) M G University, Kottayam, retained the overall champions trophy in both men's and women's section, even as five new meet records were created on the concluding day of the 67th All India Inter University Athletics Championship held in Sree Kanteerava stadium here today.

While MG University men collected 62.5 points, their women counterparts got 41.5 points. Calicut University, both men (53) and women (33) were placed second, Kerala University men (49) and Kannur University women (28) were placed third.

Mayookha Johny of Kannur University leapt 12.93 mt to create a new meet record in triple jump, erasing the earlier record set by Salaman Antony of MG University in 2005 (12.79 mt). A P Alka Chikily of Kerala University, despite creating best meet record by leaping to a distance of 12.81 mt, had to be satisified with silver, while Tincy Mathew of Kerala University won the bronze.

Punjabi lass Deepika Handa threw the iron ball to a distance of 52.90 mt to create a new meet record in hammer throw, obliterating the five-year-old record in the name of Ritu Rani of Delhi University (50.65 mt). Suman Kumari, also of Punjab University, and Renuka Thapa of M D Saraswati took the silver and bronze respectively.

Sanjo Devi of Himachal Pradesh threw the javelin to a record distance of 51.69 mt, erasing the record set by Prajisha of MG University in 2005 (49.41 mt). G Gokila of Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Science had to be content with the best meet record (50.06 mt) and silver medal and Nisha of M D University, Rohtak, won the bronze.

Kannur University and MG University women gave record-breaking performances in 4 x 100 mt relay and 4 x 400 mt relay. While Kannur lasses covered 4 X 100 mt in 46.92 sec as against the earlier record timing of 47.02 set in 2000 by MG University, MG University covered the 4 X 400 mt distance in 3:45.40 sec as against the previous record time of 3:46.50 sec set by MG University in 2001.
