Mumbai, Jan 29 (UNI) The Bombay High Court today deferred the deliverance of sentence against former Deputy Commissioner of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, G R Khairnar, to January 31, for committing contempt of court by breaching a City Civil Court order.

Justice A M Khanvilkar has directed Khairnar's counsel to bring before the court an existing provision in law that empowers the Deputy Commissioner to allow reconstruction and shifting of existing shop structures in the name of repairs.

As many as 36 shops, the reconstruction of which had been stayed by the Civil Court in the early 90's, were allowed to raise the height of their structures and shift the same a few feet off the road by Mr Khairnar and four other Municipal officials in the name of repairs.

While three of these officers including Mr Khairnar have retired, their counsel has sought minimum sentence submitting that there is no chance of repetition of the mistake.
