Former MLA convicted in disproportionate wealth case
Chennai, Jan 29 (UNI) A Special Court today convicted and sentenced former AIADMK MLA Theni Paneerselvam, to three-year rigorous imprisonment (RI) in the Rs 21.36 lakh disproportionate wealth case.
Special Judge R Dakshinamoorthy, convicted and sentenced Paneerselvam to three years RI and awarded one year RI to his two wives Dhanapackiam and Janakiammal.
The judge, however, suspended the sentence for two months to enable the accused to go for an appeal.
The judge held that the prosecution had proved the charges levelled against the accused beyond any reasonable doubt.
According to Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, during his tenure as MLA between 1992 to 1996, Paneerselvam had amassed wealth to the tune of Rs 21.36 lakh in his name and in the names of his wives, disproportionate to his known sources of income.
