Khammam, Jan 29 (UNI) At least five people were injured in police firing and more than ten policemen were stoned when police tried to disperse Left party activists staging a dharna in protest against the construction of Polavaram project on Godavari river before the Sub Collector's Office at Bhadrachalam in this district today.

Police said the Communist Party of India CPI(M) activists laid siege to the Sub collector's office demanding that the government stop the construction of Polavaram project on Godavari river.

The activists squatted on the roads even as the police rushed to the venue and warned that they would resort to lathicharge if the activists did not give up the agitation.

After an argument between the police and CPM leaders, the irate activists pelted stones on police. The police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the mob and opened fire in the air, in which five persons received bullet injuries. Several policemen were injured in stone pelting.

The injured were admitted to a local hospital. Several Left activists were also arrested.
