Agri association to hold agitations in Pondy, Karaikal

Puducherry, Jan 29 (UNI) The CPI-affiliated Puducherry Agriculturists Association would organise picketing stirs at three centers here and one in karaikal region to press their demands.

Association president R Viswanathanan, MLA, addressing a press conference here today said the government had announced the setting up of an association for agricultural labourers during 2005 and in the budget speech 2005, the Chief Minister had announced the provision of pension and free rain coats to the agricultural labourers. However, nothing had materialised so far.

Instead, the government was in the process of taking the census of the agriculturists through the statastics department, which was improper, he said and demanded that the list of the agriculturists and labourers taken by the statastics department should be displayed in every Anganwadi centers so that those who were left out could be included.

Stating that the association had already submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister on January 11, Mr Viswanathan, also CPI national council member said the agitation was to draw the attention of the government to this important issue.
