Govt to compile statistical data on minorities
New Delhi, Jan 28 (UNI) In a move that could again leave the BJP redfaced, the government has undertaken tabulation of demographic statistics of different religious communities in the country for smooth implementation of welfare schemes for minorities.
Recently, the BJP made scathing attack on the government on the constitution of the Sachar Committee , the findings of which painted Muslims as economically and socially deprived community in the country.
The Minority Affairs Ministry is compiling minority statistics on the basis of the latest census figures to identify areas which required greater flow of funds aimed for uplifting the minority groups.
The statistics would be sent to different government ministries and departments to to ensure that funds reached the targeted areas.
More than one-quarter of the minority population would receive funds on priority, official sources said.
The Ministry has already announced to implement the Sachar committee report in toto. And, ongoing demographic exercise has been taken up for this purpose.
Earlier, the ruling UPA wanted to carry out enumeration of muslims in the armed forces. But the proposal was dropped following criticism from the BJP.
