Freedom Fighter Nirmala Sher Jung Cremated

New Delhi, Jan 28 (UNI) Grandmother of India's star shooter Samresh Jung, Nirmala Sher Jung, who died here yesterday, was cremated today.

Ms Jung's husband, Chaudhary Sher Jung, was a well known freedom fighter and a contemporary of the martyr Bhagat Singh.

Ms Jung, 93, was also a freedom fighter and a former Vice- Principal of the Indraprastha College. Until her death, Ms Jung actively espoused the cause of delinquent children here and was a frequent visitor to the city's remand homes to do counselling work.

She was also a counsellor with the Delhi Legal Aid Cell since its inception.

Ms Jung was born at Lahore in 1914 and studied at Kinnaird College.

In Sher Jung's biography, Mr Inder Kumar Gujral, former Prime Minister, recalls in a foreword how he met Chaudhary Sher Jung in a Lahore jail along with Nirmala Sher Jung.

''She met Chaudhary Sher Jung when he was serving a jail term following the well known Ahmedgarh Arms Dacoity case. They got married in 1938 on his release from jail.'' After the partition in 1947, Ms Jung joined her husband in a pioneering work in the rehabilitation of the Hindu and Sikh refugees at the Kingsway Camp in Delhi. They also provided shelter to the Muslims in distress and provided them safety at their home.

Ms Jung taught at the Indraprastha College from 1938 and later became the Vice-Principal. She set up a Psychology lab in the college. She also taught law at Delhi University. She is survived by her son, Col Shailesh Jung, father of well known shooter Samresh Jung.
