Chennai Corporation re-polls on Feb 18: SEC
Chennai, Jan 28 (UNI) The re-poll to 100 wards of Chennai City Corporation will be held on February 18, State Election Commissioner (SEC) D Chandrasekaran said today.
Talking to newspersons here, he said filing of the nominations would begin tomorrow.
The re-poll was necessitated, following resignation of Mayor Subramanian and other 97 councillors.
The Mayor and the councillors were asked to put their papers by DMK President M Karunanidhi following a Madras High Court's split verdict on a batch of petitions filed by other political parties seeking re-poll.
The council, in a brief meeting on December 25, presided over by Deputy Mayor R Sathyabama, took record of the resignations of 98 councillors and completed the formalities.
However, Mr Armstrong of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), whose ward figured in the list of 99 wards, refused to resign.
Earlier, two AIADMK councillors resigned to protest against the violent incidents during the polling, taking the total number of vacant wards in the Corporation to 100.
