3O people injured in Singur clash

Kolkata, Jan 28 (UNI) Altogether 30 people, including a magistrate and 11 policemen, were injured today when they clashed in four places while marching to Singur protesting against farm land acquisition and imposition of prohibitory order in the area.

Police lathicharged, fired tear gas shells and used water canon after hundreds of Trinamool activists indulged in heavy big-batting and broke the police cordon at Dankuni in Hoogly district, Inspector General of Police(Law and Order) Raj Kanojia said.

Of the injured the magistrate and four policemen were hospitalised.

Violent TMC workers also scuffled with police at Baidyabati and Nalikul in Hoogly district and Naitipara in Howrah district while trying to force their way to Singur, where prohibitory orders under Section 144 Cr PC were in force.

Alleging that police made an unprovoked lathicharge on peaceful protestionists, Trinamool Congress leader Madan Mitra said more than 20 party worker were injured at Dankuni.

Mr Mitra and women TMC leader Kakoli Ghosh Dasdidar were leading the agitators at Dankuni.

Tension ran high in the areas where trouble broke out following the clash between TMC activists and police.

However Mr Kanojia said the situation was brought under control.
