R-Day celebrated in New York with enthusiasm

New York, Jan 27 (UNI) India's 58th Republic Day was celebrated here last night at a function organised by the Consulate General of India and attended by members of the Indian-American community.

Consul General Neelam Deo addressed the community meeting by reading out excerpts of President APJ Abdul Kalam's speech.

Deputy Consul General AR Ghanashyam welcomed the gathering and conducted the proceedings of the two-hour event amid freezing temperatures in the city and across much of the tristate area which houses many Indians.

PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi, who was conferred the Padma Vibhushan on the occasion of Republic Day, was among those present on the occassion. She thanked the Indian government for bestowing her such an honour.

Upendra Chivukula of New Jersey, a first-generation Indian-American elected to a US state, as well as other lawmakers also attended the function. They called for efforts to further bolster Indo-US relations.

Congressman Steve Israel, a Democrat elected from Long Island, recalled his and fellow American lawmakers' visit to India in 2004. He praised India and US for maintaining good relations and stressed on cooperation in the area of solar energy and research in various areas.

An estimated 300 Indian-Americans attended the Republic Day celebrations.
