One killed, unrest continue in Terai

Kathmandu, Jan 27 (UNI) One person was killed today when police opened fire on the agitating members of the Madheshi People's Rights Forum (MPRF) as unrest continues in Southern part of Nepal.

The general strike called by the MRPF affected normal life in Terai district today.

According to the District Administration Office (DOA), Bara, the protestor was killed after police opened fire on the agitating members of the Madheshi People's Rights Forum(MPRF).

Youths vandalised a statue of the supreme commander of the 1990 democratic movement Ganesh Man Singh, a local television Kantipur said.

Protestors also vandalised the land survey office, ambulance service building and also broke into the vault of the Rastriya Banijya Bank, the Nepal Electricity Board office at different places in Tarai.

Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala met CPN-UML General-Secretary Madhav Kumar Nepal this morning at the official residence of the former in Baluwatar and discussed the ongoing unrest in Terai.

The leaders agreed to call the meeting of eight parties to address the genuine demands of the Madhesi people, it said.

More than half-a-dozen people have been killed since the outbreak of the unrest in Terai.
