Flag march in curfew-bound Jabalpur

Jabalpur, Jan 27 (UNI) Police staged flag march in curfew bound six police station areas of the city this afternoon in the wake of mounting communal tension over removal of posters relating to a religious function.

The situation in the city was peaceful though indefinite curfew remained in force since its promulgation in Kotwali, Lordganj, Hanumantal, Gohalpur, Belbaugh and Omti police stations since late last night, District Collector Sanjay Dube said.

Curfew was clamped as a precautionary measure as confrontation-like situation arose with slogan shouting by members of two communities in Kamanigate area around midnight over removal of posters. Timely police intervention averted clash, he said.

Mr Dube said more than 25 people of both communities had been detained over last night's incident. Educational institutions were given holiday today.

Police personnel staged flag march in curfew bound areas, while the situation would be reviewed this evening to consider granting relaxation in curfew.

The Collector said Jain community's Gajrath Mahotsava venue at Vijaynagar was kept out of purview of curfew. Police personnel in large number had been deployed in the city, he added.
