Guwahati, Jan 27 (UNI) A Congress activist, attacked by ULFA militants last night, succumbed to his injuries today in Sibsagar district of Asom, even as a 'lance corporal' of ULFA was killed in an encounter with the Army in Tinsukia district.

The 6/11 Gorkha Regiment shot dead Binod Ghatiyal of the 28th battalion of the ULFA at Hahkhati, Dirak in Kakopathar of Tinsukia district.

Army sources informed that the slain militant had attacked an Army convoy with a grenade, but it did not explode. Ghatiyal was killed in retaliatory firing.

He was suspected to be involved in the recent ULFA carnage of Hindi-speaking people.

Night curfew continued to be clamped in Tinsukia district from 2200 hours to 0500 hours, district administration sources informed.

The orders would remain in place till further review.

Meanwhile, panic spread among Congress workers in view of ULFA's increased attacks on partymen following its diktat to the latter to leave the Congress fold or face dire consequences.

The former general secretary of the Sonari College in Sibsagar district, who sustained injuries in last night's ULFA attack, succumbed today.

The district also saw overnight attacks, triggered by the ULFA, though no serious injury or damage was reported in the other incidents.

The banned outfit launched a grenade attack at Rajiv Bhawan at Sonari of the district last night. However, there was no casualty in the incident.

Another blast was also reported from near an electricity transformer in the district late last night. No major damage was caused to the transformer, nor any injuries reported.

Party workers were reported to be resigning in Upper Asom following the ULFA warning, though Pradesh Congress officials had refused to comment on it.
