ABVP demands better facilities for student hostels
Udupi, Jan 27 (UNI) The state unit of the Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) today demanded that the state government should take up the issue of 'worst and inhumane conditions' prevailed in almost all scheduled caste/scheduled tribe and other backward class (OBC) students hostels in the state.
Addressing the press conference here today. Mr N Ravi Kumar, state organising secretary of ABVP demanded that a 'Major Surgery' was immediately required for almost all hostels in the state which were lacking proper bathroom, toilet facility and no hygiene food and adequate rooms.
The ladies hostels in several places have not even proper security apprangements and no compound walls for protection.
He said that the ABVP had conductaed a survey of 170 hostels in the state which revealed that in several hostels had no bathrooms at all while in many other hotels either had one room for ovr 150 students or one bathroom and one toilet for 300 students.
He urged that the Chief Minister, the Deputy Chief Minister and the social welfare Minister should spend a day in these hostels to realise the ground reality. He charged that the social welfare department and the wardens were involved in large scale corruption by siphoning the funds alloted for maintanance and students food expenses. The concerned district commissioners should also be directly held responsible for these lapses.
Mr Kumar demanded that the students food expenses should be enhanced to Rs 1000 from the present Rs 500 and construction of additional rooms according to the students strength and repair works of all hostels with proper toilet and bathrooms should be taken up, he added.
He said that the ABVP had earlier also conducted a similar survey of hostels in the state earlier 15 years back but no actions had been so for taken by the government to improve the conditions.
