Republic day observed in Manipur amid boycott call

Imphal, Jan 26 (UNI) The 57th Republic Day was observed today at Manipur under tight security.

The main function was held at the Kangla, Imphal, where Manipur Governor Dr S S Sidhu took the salute.

About 38 contingents of police, CRPF, BSF and schools took part in the march past.

Various cultural items of different communities settled in Manipur were also presented. About eight tableaux representing state government departments also took part in the observation.

The Governor honoured Master Karam with Jeevan Raksha medal for bravery and reduced the sentences of 15 prisoners on the occasion.

About 16 policemen were also honoured for showing exemplary courage.

The march past which began at 1st Manipur Rifles went past the Secretariat main road and then proceeded towards the Kangla where the salute was taken. They proceeded towards Khuyathong and culminated at 1st Manipur Rifles ground again.

A boycott was called by four main militant outfits -- the Kamtapur Liberation Organization (KLO), Manipur People's Liberation Front (MPLF), Tripura People's Democratic Front (TPDF) and the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and a general strike was observed in the state.

All inter state bus services were cancelled and since late last night secuerity personnel were posted at all important sites.

The strike which began at 1 A M, will continue till 6 pm.
