R-Day passes off peacefully in Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 26: Despite a high degree of threat perception and a shutdown call given by several militant and separatist groups, the 58th Republic day in Kashmir passed off peacefully today.

The main function in the Valley was held at the Bakshi Stadium here where state Agriculture Minister Abdul Aziz Zargar unfurled the tri-colour and took salute at the march past.

Contingents of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF, BSF, IRP, ITBP, Fire and Emergency Services, Home Guards, NCC cadets, school children besides women police took part in the parade.

Mr Zargar also inspected a guard of honour.

On the occasion, school children presented cultural programmes.

Reports of peaceful Republic Day celebrations were received from major towns and district headquarters of Anantnag, Baramulla, Badgam, Pulwama and Kupwara.

This was for the fifth time in a row that the Republic Day passed off peacefully in the entire Kashmir valley.

Meanwhile, a handful of BJP activists hoisted the national flag at 'Ghanta Ghar' (Clock Tower) in Lal Chowk here this morning.

The CRPF also unfurled the tri-colour at Lal Chowk.
