Peaceful celebrations mark MARK R-DAY in J-K

Jammu, Jan 26 (UNI) Peaceful celebrations today marked the 58th Republic Day in Jammu and Kashmir with Governor Lt Gen (retd) S K Sinha hoisting the Tricolour amid tight security at the M A stadium here.

Thousands of people from all walks of life, including women and children, gathered at the M A Stadium in the morning.

Security in the city was put on ''high alert'' to foil any attempt by the anti-national elements, and state Police and Para-Military personnel were deployed at all the strategic positions around the stadium.

The celebrations begin with Governor unfurling the National Flag at 1000 hrs.

He also took salute of the marching contingents of Army, BSF, CRPF, JKAP, Auxiliary Police, Fire Services, Ex-Servicemen, NCC Cadets and School Children led by Col Chikara, Commanding Officer 1 Jak L I.

Thousands of School Children particiated in various cultural events, followed by the J and K police's ''Dare Devils'' presenting their skills on motorcycles.

Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, several ministers, senior military and civil dignitaries also witnessed the performances of school children and soldiers on the occasion.

Special transport arrangements, route diversions and parkings, had been made to facilitate people in reaching the venue.

As per reports, the day was celebrated with equal fervour and gaiety acoss the state, including at Army and Paramilitary establishments, Districts, and Tehsil Headquarters.
