K'taka Governor calls for eradication of corruption

Bangalore, Jan 26: Karnataka Governor T N Chaturvedi today called for rooting out corruption which is threatening very democratic setup in the country.

Delivering his address at the 58th anniversary of the Republic Day Parade ground here, he stressed the need to have policy of zero tolerance towards all acts of corruption whether it was small or big.

He said that "every act of corruption should be investigated thoroughly and those found guilty should be prosecuted and punished as quickly as possible and the errant must not get protection in any kind due to extraneous influences and pressures as it has the strength to corrode, decay and destroy the democratic system in the society".

Complimenting Karnataka Lokayukta for its active role in eradicating corruption, Mr Chaturvedi called for strengthening the institution by giving more power. "It is necessary to encourage honest people by ensuring that the corrupt do not thrive". He also warned that Corruption and unrefuted allegations of misuse of power for self and pelf do shake the faith of ordinary citizens on the very democratic principles.

Stating that Karnataka is excelling in every fields and setting benchmarks in the country, Mr Chaturvedi called upon the State government to give equal attention for the development of rural areas and strengthen the Panchayath Institutions. There is also need to take special measures to enable women members of the society to become economically self-reliant and enjoy their rightful role in every sphere of life.

Mr Chaturvedi called of the State government to take immediate steps for holding elections to urban local bodies, which are overdue.

To mark the occasion, children from various schools presented cultural program.

Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, opposition leader in the Legislative Assembly N Dharma Singh, senior officials from Defence, Civil and Police departments participated in the function.
