Fishermen gherao Ministers, MP

Puducherry, Jan 26 (UNI) Over 100 fishermen of Kanagachettikkulam near here today gheraoed two Ministers, a Member of Parliament and a municipal chairman in support of their demands.

It happened when Tourism Minister Malladi Krishna Rao along with Education Minister M O H F Shajahan, Lok Sabha MP M Ramadass, Ozhukarai Municipality Chairman Jayapal, Secretary to Government Sahoo and DRDA Project Director Mathew Samuel declared open an anganwadi building at Kanagachettikkulam Village.

The building was constructed from the LAD funds of Prof Ramadass.

When they were about to leave, the fishermen blocked the VIPs vehicles and ghearoed them demanding the construction of houses to the tsunami-affected people.

They maintained the government had given an assurance that houses would be constructed for the tsunami-affected within six months.

Though two years had passed, nothing materialised.The temperory sheds provided by non-governmental organisations were also in a bad shape.

The Ministers informed them that a decision would be announced in ten days following which the fishermen allowed their vehicles to move.

They threatened to block the East Coast Road if no action was taken by February five.
