Chennai, Jan 25: The Dalit Panthers of India (DPI) today urged the Tamil Nadu Government to reconsider its demand for a rewrite of Constitution.

Participating in a debate on the motion of thanks to the Governor's address in the Sate Assembly, DPI Floor Leader Selvam rpt Selvam said though about 100 amendments had been made so far, the Constitution should not be rewritten as it was framed by experts particularly by Dr B R Ambedkar who belonged to the oppressed class.

The demand to rewrite the Constitution was revolutionary but it might cause anguish among people belonging to the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe, he said.

The government, in the annual Governor's address to the Assembly, urged the Centre to rewrite the Constitution afresh having regard to the changing needs, while preserving the unity, integrity and sovereignty of the nation.

While the ruling DMK's other allies -- Congress, Pattali Makkal Katchi and the Left parties -- had supported the demand, the DPI was the lone ally to oppose it.
