CPM seeks PM's intervention into UCIL's waste materials leakage
Ranchi, Jan 26 (UNI) The CPI (M) today urged Primer Minister Manmohan Singh's to look into the health hazards caused by leakage of waste materials from the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) and order a high level inquiry.
Party's politburo member and in-charge of the state Brinda Karat in a letter to Dr Singh said a three-member delegation of the CPM recently visited the site and made an on-the-spot assessment.
The delegation found leakage at some pipes through which wastes of the UCIL were let out, the letter said adding the affluent mixed with water of Swarnarekha was causing danger to the local populace of surrounding seven villages.
The villagers said a huge number of aquatic lives had died. They also alleged that the UCIL management only promised to repair the damaged pipes but remained non-commital on providing safe drinking water to the villages.
