Ranchi, Jan 26 (UNI) The CPI(M) has demanded Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's intervention into health hazards caused by leakage of waste materials from the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) at Jadugoda in Jharkhand.

CPI(M) Politburo member Brinda Karat in a letter to Dr Singh said that a three-member delegation of her party had recently visited the site and found leakages at some pipes of the UCIL and the waste water flew downs the Swarnarekha river.

The villagers also alleged that due to wastes, a huge number of aquatic lives also died. The affected people alleged that the UCIL management only promised to repair the damaged pipes but remained non-commital on providing safe drinking water to the villages.

The party urged the Prime Minister to look into the matter.
