Tight security in Puducherry

Puducherry, Jan 25 (UNI) Security has been stepped up in the Union Territory of Puducherry in view of the 58th Republic Day celebrations here tomorrow.

All vehicles entering Puducherry are being thoroughly screened at border checkposts. Police were checking hotels, lodges and other places for strangers and residents in several areas were requested to inform the police, if they came across any suspicious looking person in their area.

Public coming to witness the Republic Day celebrations were requested not to bring any bags, water bottles or cell phones. All invitees would be allowed after a thorough check. Police personnel, students and others taking part in the march past would also be frisked, police sources said.

The Beach road has been declared vehicle-free zone for a few hours both in the morning and evening, the sources added.
