Tea worker dies in crossfire

Silchar, Jan 25 (UNI) A man was shot dead today at Dholai Tea Estate in Asom's Hailakandi district during a crossfire between security forces and the suspected Bru militants.

Police said Premlal Karmakar(35), a tea garden worker, was hit when suspected activists of United Democratic Liberation Army (UDLA), a newly formed Bru outfit, and members of 21-Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) started crossfiring at 1430 hrs today. Karmakar died after a bullet hit his head.

A contingent of police and CRPF led by Hailakandi Superintendent of Police P Ananda Mohan Tiwari rushed to the spot and have started combing operation in the remote areas of the south district near Mizoram border to nab the militants.

Police said the tea belt is dominated by Bru militant outfits since long.
