Bangalore, Jan 25: The much awaited diesel version of Maruti's hot selling world car 'Swift' was launched in the city today announcing the Company's foray into unexplored diesel territory in the country.

Following the national launch at Delhi and Mumbai yesterday, Maruti unveiled its latest offering in 12 cities across the country today.

Maruti had no presence in the diesel segment accounting for nearly 18 per cent of the car market in the world, and Swift would fill in the void, Maruti Udyog Divisional Manager (Marketing) Mayank Pareek told newsmen here after the launch. Maruti was currently selling around 5,000 swifts a month across the country.

The Diesel version is powered by a state of the art 1.3 litre DDiS engine, which unlike conventional diesel engines was silent, clean, compact and powerful besides highly fuel efficient. The engine was a new generation one with five injection technology.

Suzuki Motor Corporation and Maruti Udyog have made a major investment in Manesar near Gurgaon for diesel engines which would produce 100,000 engines initially and scaled up to 300,000. The engines which were Euro three compliant would be exported to Europe later.

The ex-showroom price of two diesel variants introduced in the city were Swift LDi-Rs 4,66,268 and Swift VDi Rs 4,94,795.
