Maruti launches Swift Diesel in Jaipur

Jaipur, Jan 25 (UNI) Car market leader Maruti Udyog Limited (MUL) today unveiled its 'Swift Diesel' here.

Mr Manohar Bhat, General Manager (sales), while describing the salient features of the car said, 1.3 litre, DDiS engine is the smallest four-cylinder diesel engine passenger car in the world.

He calimed that ''unlike conventional diesel engines the Swift Diesel engine is silent, compact and powerful and offers superior fuel efficiency''.

He said considering the growing demand for diesel cars in India, Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) and Maruti Udyog Ltd have made major investments in diesel engine manufacturing facilites.

He said technology for the new Swift Diesel engine was obtained by SMC through a technical licence agreement with Fiat and Adam Opel.

The diesel engine is being manufactured by a new joint venture company of SMC and MUL's -- ''Suzuki Powertrain India Limited'' -- at Manesar near Gurgaon.

Both the companies propose to invest Rs 2,500 crore in the plant by 2010. The new facility has a capacity to manufacture one lakh diesel engines annually, which could be scaled up to three lakh engines on demand.
