New Delhi, Jan 25 (UNI) In a new initiative to make disabled persons self-sufficient, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today distributed PCO battery operated tri-cycles to 23 handicapped people.

''I hope that handicapped people would easily be able to ply battery-operated tri-cycles instead of hand-operated ones,'' she said.

They have been provided MTNL PCO with ISD, STD and Local phone facilities.

Appreciating the efforts of Delhi SC/ST/OBC/Minorities and Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation Limited for making handicapped persons economically sound, Ms Dikshit said around 200 handicapped people would be offered battery-operated tri-cycles in the current year.

She said MTNL had rendered appreciable contribution by providing free of cost the entire STD, IST, Local PCO kit to handicapped persons.

''The actual cost of providing this facility would have been around Rs 20,000 each but MTNL has now reduced it just to Rs 9500 after making available free of cost kit,'' she added.

The package includes Rs 3000 pre-paid MTNL card.

Ms Dikshit said the Corporation under the Delhi Government has been providing useful assistance to people.

The Delhi Government in collaboration with the National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation formulated the scheme.
