Kapurthala, Jan 25 (UNI) Police has registered a case against the supporters of Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal for violating the prohibitory orders clamped in this district against taking out processions, before filing the nomination papers on January 23.

SSP Rajiv Ahir told UNI today that the case was registered under section 188 IPC on the directions of District Election officer Raminder Singh as the supporters of Congress candidate Sukhjinder Kaur Rana and SAD candidate Raghbir Singh, had violated the model code of conduct.

Mr Ahir however did not confirm whether both the candidates were also involved in the case and said that he had ordered police officials to identify the culprits to be booked in the case.

However, Deputy Commissioner cum District Election officer Raminder Singh said that Kapurthala Returning officer Karnail Singh, on whose report the case was taken up, had said that both the candidates had not committed any violations during filing of nominations in his office on January 23.

But he had said that their supporters, who had come in large numbers, had committed the violations of the prohibitory orders.

Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Electoral Officer today sought a report from Deputy Commissioner on the action taken by the administration on the Congress and SAD candidates who had violated the poll code during filing of nominations, official sources said.

The CEO has also sought the video footage of the entire episode following media reports of violations committed by both the candidates.
