Chennai, Jan 25 (UNI) The AIADMK today filed a petition before the Madras High Court seeking to restrain Mr D Chandrasekharan from functioning as the State Election Commissioner (SEC).

In his petition, submitted on behalf of the AIADMK, the Party's Fisheries Wing Secretary and MLA D Jayakumar also sought appointment of a retired Supreme Court Judge or retired Chief Justice of any High Court or any retired High Court Judge for supervising the election to be conducted by the Election Commission.

He also submitted that on a batch of petitions from AIADMK and other political parties, highlighting large scale irregularities during Chennai Corporation polls, a Division Bench comprising Justices S J Mukhopadhaya and E M Ibrahim Kalifulah heavily criticised Mr D Chandrasekharan for his laxity in performing his duties and failing to check rigging during elections.

The heavy strictures passed by the Judges were sufficient enough to show that Mr Chandrasekharan was unfit to continue as SEC, Mr Jayakumar added.

He said the entire opposition had disclosed that as long as Mr Chandrasekharan remained as the SEC, no useful purpose would be served.

They also decided not to partcipate in any local body elections if Mr Chandrasekharan continued as the SEC, he added.
