Transport strike called off in Mumbai
Mumbai, Jan 24 (UNI) The Maharashtra Rajya Truck Tempo Tankers Bus Vahatuk Mahasangh has called off the agitation to protest against the increase of Insurance Premiums.
This decision has been taken after discussions were held in New Delhi with the Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and Secretary, Ministry of Finance. They have taken due congnizance of the concerns expressed by the representatives of the domain of transport, a release here today said.
The government has agreed to amend the Insurance provisions in the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, to the effect that limitation be placed on the time frame for filing a claim, minor injuries be excluded from mandatory adjudication by Motor Accidents Claim Tribunal (MACT), jurisdiction of MACT be restricted to the place of accident and other modifications which would prevent undue claims outgo.
These steps are required to be taken with due urgency given the various media reports of fradulent claims being lodged with MACT.
Such payouts are the result of inadequate systemic controls and the absence of structured compensation, the release added.
