Three killed, eight injured in explosion at cracker unit

Madurai, Jan 24 (UNI) Three people, including two women were charred to death on the spot while eight others sustained burn injuries in an explosion at a fire cracker manufacturing unit at Duraisamypuram near Sivakasi at Virudhunagar district in Tamil Nadu today.

Police said the mishap occurred in the evening when the victims were mixing the chemicals for making fire crackers, at the Pothi Fire Works unit.

The fire tenders fought for two and half hours to douse the blaze which erupted at 1500 hrs and lasted till 1730 hrs.

The District Collector S S Jawahar and a police team rushed to the spot.

The deceased were identified as Jothilakshmi(21), Lakshmi(35) and Murugan(35).

The injured were admitted to Sivakasi Government Hospital.
