More hospitals come under scanner in TN kidney racket

Madurai, Jan 24 (UNI) A Special team today raided three more private hospitals here in connection with the kidney racket, as these hospitals had also been performing renal transplantations.

Police said with the investigation into the kidney racket continuing, the special team had already investigated two private hospitals located in K K Nagar and two more at Madurai-Sivaganga road and Madurai-Melur Road in the city for their involvement in the racket.

A special team which scrutinised the records found that these hospitals had performed renal transplntation procedures. The team had also investigated some yet-to-be permitted hospitals for renal transplantations.

Investigation was also conducted at two private hospitals in Sangam Road and at Madurai-Theni road, respectively.

The city police had sought details of renal surgeries performed at these hospitals in the first one year. They had been asked to submit all details, including personal history of the patients and involvement of brokers for the surgeries performed.

The special team was also investigating into alleged link the doctors here had with brokers, who deceived the poor people in the tsunami affected areas with false assurances of attractive payment.

The City Police Commissioner M Chidambarasamy had already formed two special squads to investigate the matter.

The special team is also hoping that funds for rehabilitation of tsunami victims from abroad would not be affected following the disclosures of renal transplantations performed by the hospitals here.

Sleuths from the CB-CID, Chennai, were also expected to arrive here this week in connection with the investigtion launched into the racket.
