K'taka: Govt must fill vacant Council Chairman post
Bangalore, Jan 24: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC)President Mallikarjuna Kharge today urged the State Government to takeimmediate steps to fill the Legislative Council Chairman post lyingvacant since a long time.
Addressing newsmen here, he said that the Governor had appointed aproterm Chairman for the Council as the sitting Deputy Chairman of theCouncil was hospitalised.
Mr Kharge felt that in this situation the government should take steps to fill the vacancy and uphold the democratic values.
He said that Congress is enjoying majority in the 75-member houseand his party candidate was expected to get elected to the postunopposed. He denied that there was no any unanimity in the party onthe selection of the candidate for the post.
The KPCC would meet the Governor T N Chaturvedi on the issue andsubmit a memorandum urging him to prevail upon the state government toannounce the calendar of events for the elections to fill the post, headded.
The post of Chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Council hasremained vacant after end of the term of the incumbent Congresscandidate V R Sudarshan since a couple of months.
