IICT Scientist gets UK Standard Award

Hyderabad, Jan 24 (UNI) Dr Ahmed Kamal, Scientist, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad (IICT) here, has been awarded the prestigious UKIERI Standard Award-2006 for his contribution to the field of ''Biomedical solutions for India and UK - Discovery Next Generation Anti-infectives''.

A research grant of 1.5 lakh British Pound has been given for a project proposal between Dr Ahmed Kamal and Prof.Andrew David Miller, Imperial College Genetic Therapies Centre, London on Biomedical Solutions for India and UK for +Discovering Next Generation Antinfective Drugs+ under the UK-India education and research initiative.

Dr Kamal and Prof.Miller will combine their expertise to discover novel small molecule antibacterial drugs based on peptide-nucleic acid and nucleoside analogues. The approach will be adaptable to addressing anti-tuberculosis, anti-viral and anti-malaria target, an IICT release here said today.

Dr Ahmed Kamal's research work is multifaceted and he excels in pharmaceutical chemistry. He has to his credit 170 scientific publications and 40 patents. Five notworthy US patents had been licensed to US based pharmaceutical companies for clinical trials, the release said.
