Coldwave conditions continue to ease: Warm day in Capital

New Delhi, Jan 24 (UNI) Coldwave conditions continued to ease as the Capital along with many other areas of the north-west region, today experienced a warm day.

After low temperatures for the last three weeks, the cold winds here showed some signs of relenting with the city experiencing warm weather.

Though people here woke up to another chilly morning, with the minimum ruling at 5.3 degree Celsius, three degrees below normal, the sunlight later in the day coupled with decreasing intensity of the cold Northerly winds, that have brought chill in the past weeks, brought in a warmth in the air.

In Himachal Pradesh, the coldwave conditions have eased with minimum temperature at Shimla rising by four degrees to stand at 7.2 degree.

The minimum and maximum temperatures at several places in the state were registering an upward trend with Nahan in Sirmaur district recording a high of nine degrees as compared to 7.8 degrees recorded yesterday.

Temperatures in the high altitude areas of tribal districts of Kinnuar, Lahaul Spiti, Chamba and Kullu were also rising and were staying between minus 10 and minus 18 degrees, against minus 15 to minus 25 degree Celsius being recorded a few days ago.

Sundernagar and Bhuntar recorded minimum temperatures of point three and zero degrees as compared to minus point three degrees each recorded yesterday, the met office said.

Nauni in Solan district and the famous tourist resort of Mashobra also recorded marginal increase in the day temperatures, which stood at 1.5 and 4.9 degree respectively, while Dharamshala in Kangra district and Kalpa in Kinnuar district recorded marginal decrease at minus 2.4 and 6.3 degrees.

Similarly, the day temperatures also continued to rise with Kalpa and Shimla registering maximum of 12.4 and 16.7 degree respectively.

Rain or thundershowers are likely to occur at isolated places in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Coldwave conditions prevailed in some parts of Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, east Rajasthan, east Madhya Pradesh and north Chattisgarh.

Night temperatures were appreciably below normal in some parts of Bihar, northwest Madhya Pradesh, and in remaining parts of Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. They were below normal in Assam, Meghalaya, Jammu and Kashmir, and in some parts of south interior Karnataka, Kerala and in remaining parts of Jharkhand, east Rajasthan, east Madhya Pradesh and north Chattisgarh.

Night temperatures, however, were appreciably above normal in Sikkim, Gujarat, coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and in some parts of northwest Rajasthan. They were above normal in some parts of Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada and were normal over the rest of the country.

In Rajasthan, people got some relief from cold as mercury shot up by a few degrees at many places. The minimum temperature in Churu went up to 3.5 from 1.7 the other day while Pilani in Jhunjhnu district remained the coldest place with 3.3 degree.

The state capital Jaipur also recorded an increase of 2 degrees at 5.1 degree with bright sunshine during the day.

In Punjab, the minimum temperature hovered two to four degree below normal at Amritsar, Adampur, Ludhiana, Patiala and Karnal.Fog reduced the visibility to zero in some areas of the state.

People suffered severe cold in Amritsar and Adampur with temperatures recording 0.5 degrees and 0.6 degrees respectively.

Ludhiana registered 4.1 degrees while Patiala had 4.4 degrees, three degrees below normal.
