Land seizure protest, women try self-immolation

Hyderabad, Jan 23: A woman dowsed herself in kerosene and set herself ablaze here agitated over being evicted by Housing Board (HB) officials from land where she had been living for several years.

About 50 families had been living in the West Maredpally area of Secunderabad for the past 70 years on an area of 4,000 sq yards.

When HB authorities tried to take back 700 sq yards of the land yesterday, residents entered into an altercation with them and the police.

Police tried to disperse the agitators, at which point the woman tried to set fire to herself. Police stopped her attempt and took her into custody.
