UP Cong demands CBI probe in madarsa rape case

Lucknow, Jan 23 (UNI) Alleging total failure of constitutional system in Uttar Pradesh, Congress today demanded President's rule in the state and a CBI probe in the Allahabad madarsa rape case.

A delegation of UP Congress met governor T V Rajeswar this evening and submitted a memoradum demanding CBI probe in the crime.

State Congress president Salman Khurshid and legislature party leader Pramod Tiwari alleged constitutional failure in UP, ''as criminals are being given patronage by the ruling party.'' ''We hold Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav directly responsible for the incidents at Allahabad and Nithari, besides other cases,'' they said.

Mr Tiwari said the police in Allahabad are trying to hush up the issue and people are agitated over the role of the state government.

''The CM went to Allahabad and had a dip in Ganga, but did not find time to meet the affected girls,'' he quipped.

The Congress leaders also criticised the government and demanded a National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) probe of reported naked parade of two youth by the police in Farrukhabad.
