Kochi, Jan 23 (UNI) The United Nations today decided to observe 2009 as the International Year of Natural Fibres.

A Coir Board release said here the decision would contribute to the Millennium Development Goals by further developing the efficiency and sustainability of agricultural industries that employ millions of people.

The UN decision followed a request by the FAO in its Biennial Conference in November, 2005.

Millions of people around the world depended on the production and processing of natural fibres for their livelihood.

The International Year of Natural Fibres would raise consumer awareness of natural fibres and strengthen demand for natural fibre products.

Apart from coir, the wide range of natural fibres included cotton, wool, jute, silk and sisal.

The fashion shows, exhibitions, conferences, TV productions, documentaries and books, and competitions for school children would be organised in many countries.

The Chairman of Coir Board A C Jose would attend the International Steering Committee session in Rome on January 30.
