Udupi seer accuser produced in court

Bangalore, Jan 23 (UNI) The Karnataka police today produced before the High Court Venkatesh, who had filed a case of attempted case against Udupi Pejavar mutt seer, and his sister Rukmini, allegedly under illegal police detention, following a court order.

Assistant Commissioner of Police of Chamarajpet police station Gangadhara Nayak filed his affidavit before Mr Justice H L Dattu and Mr Justice Anand Byrareddy.

The court granted time to the petitioners to go through the affidavit and file their version.

The order was passed on a habeas corpus petition, filed by Mr Venkatesh's nephew S Srinidhi.

Mr Venkatesh had filed a private complaint before the First Additional CMM, Bangalore, against Udupi Pejavar mutt seer Sri Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji and some others, alleging that the pontiff had threatened him with dire consequences as his friend, also Venkatesh, had not returned a loan of Rs 12 lakh taken from the seer.

The petitioner contended that after the details of the complaint were published in the media on January seven last, police had taken the duo into custody under the pretext of enquiry, harassed them and detained them illegally.
