UDF to launch stirs to resume road work: Convener

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 23 (UNI) Demanding the speedy completion of road works between Chengannur and Chadayamangalam, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) will organise a series of agitations from January 31, its convener P P Thankachan said today.

In the first phase of the stir, two marches would be organised simultaneously from Chengannur and Chadayamangalam on January 31.

The march would conclude at Kottarakkara on February one, he said at a news conference here.

Stating that the condition of the 71-km road was very pathetic, he held the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) responsible for the present plight as it had ''failed to clear the bills due to the Malaysian Company, the contractors for the work.'' If the government did not take proper action to find a solution of the problem after the first phase of agitation, a memorandum signed by one lakh people would be submitted to the Governor in the second phase, he said.

The UDF would also resort to other modes of agitations like laying siege to the road and a fast by its MLAs in front of the Secretariat in the third and fourth phases, if the government still failed to take steps to resume the road work, he said.
