Bhopal, Jan 23 (UNI) A petition has been filed by a Muslim organisation in the Madhya Pradesh High Court in Jabalpur against organising 'Surya Namaskar' in all government schools in the state.

Jamait Ulma's state unit has taken objection to organising 'Surya Namaskar' -- an effort by the state government to promote 'Yoga' at 0900 hrs on January 25.

Other educational institutes were also expected to take part.

''Sections 25 and 26 of the Muslim Personal Law Board prohibits organising 'Surya Namaskar'. Therefore, Muslim students can not take part in it,'' Madhya Pradesh Jamait Ulma spokesperson Nurullah Yusuf Jai said here.

He said no intervention must be made in this regard, as the matter was related to religious freedom of Muslim community. He said a delegation of the Ulma has submitted a memorandum to Governor Balram Jakhar in this regard.

School education Minister Narottam Mishra said the programme was voluntary and raising controversy was not appropriate.

''In a letter sent to the schools it has been mentioned that students interested in learning Yoga can take part in the Surya Namaskar programme,'' he said.
