Security alert in Meghalaya on eve of Republic Day
Shillong, Jan 23 (UNI) Security has been tightened across Meghalaya in view of the Republic day and the ongoing ULFA activities in neighbouring Asom.
Police officials here today said the security measures had been beefed up and anti-insurgency operation had been launched in remote areas to flush out the militants sheltering in the state.
''We are not taking any chance in view of the arrest of Asom-based ULFA and DHD militants in Meghalaya,'' a senior police official said.
So far, police have arrested four ULFAs and six DHD militants from the state.
The state police with the help of state's Special Operation Team (SOP) have also conducted raids in several areas of the state to flush out the militants.
Home Minister Robert Garnet Lyngdoh said the government has taken steps to ensure smooth and peaceful celebration on the Republic Day.
The Home Minister also appealed to the people to come out and join the celebration.
Meanwhile, the BSF personnel guarding the porous Indo-Bangladesh border along the state was keeping an extra-vigil.
