Percentage of convictions in criminal cases on the decline in Goa

Panaji, Jan 23 (UNI) Goa Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane today admitted on the floor of the State Assembly that the percentage of convictions secured in cognisable criminal cases was indeed on the decline since 2004.

This admission was made in a written reply to an unstarred question tabled by the Opposition Leader Manohar Parrikar.

''The percentage of convictions secured in the year 2006 was 56.56 per cent as against 68.03 in 2005 and 72.21 in 2004. As many as 2,785 criminal cases ended in conviction in 2006, 2,921 in 2005 and 3,349 in 2004. Consequently, there were 2,139, 1,373 and 1,289 acquittals in 2006, 2005 and 2004 respectively,'' he disclosed.
